2005 - 2009
The magazine
Code is a free magazine published by a collective of curators. It aims at introducing new forms of expression as well as to raise the interest of the public for an exciting and innovating culture.
The contemporary art scene is booming. However, little media support is available to emerging artists in this fast changing field. Code magazine intends to fill the gap by offering a platform to the young contemporary creation and its actors.
Code believes that art is often nourished by everyday life by widening the aesthetic experience of our environment, as well as by renewing our philosophical and political views. The articles published in our magazine discuss the concerns of the emerging art scene and try to stimulate a new perspective on the world. In a society where the market too often dictates its rules, Code Magazine, in both form and content, wants to reaffirm an art of living in which utopia inspires reality.
Founded in 2005 and based in Brussels until 2009, Code was run Mariana Melo, Thomas Wyngaard, Devrim Bayar, David de Tscharner, Virginie Samyn and Tine Claerhout. In 2010, the magazine has moved to Paris, where two former contributors, Laetitia Chauvin et Clément Dirié, are now in charge of the new editorial direction under the name Code 2.0

Out of Office
Galerie de l’Espace de l’Eurorégion Alpes-Méditerranée
Bruxelles
01 November — 20 December 2008
The Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (Regional Contemporary Art Fund) of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and the Institut d’Crt Contemporain, Villeurbanne-Lyon (Institute of Contemporary Art) have invited Code, a Belgian magazine devoted to the emerging art scene, to design an exhibition and a program of evening events based around a group of works from their collections – a selection inspired by the world of office technology as represented by the exhibition site, the Espace Eurorégion Alpes-Meditérannée (Gallery of the Alps-Mediterranean Euroregion Space), located in the heart of the European quarter.
Out of Office is the title of the automatic e-mail message sent when the person you have contacted cannot reply, generally because they are on holiday. A standard response which, like everything else in the office aesthetic, suppresses all trace of individuality. CODE offers eight installations in which the artists take possession of the territory of the office, all the better to escape it.
The artists: Basserode, Alain Bublex, Claude Closky, Fabrice Hyber, Stéphanie Nava, Guillaume Pinard, Thomas Ruff, Tatiana Trouvé.

It's About Time
De Winkelhaak Design Centre Antwerpen
06 June — 31 August 2008
De Winkelhaak is a brand new Design Centre meant to activate design in all its forms. For its inaugural exhibition, It's about time, the Centre asked 8 emerging Belgian designers from various disciplines to imagine themselves in 2030.
In the context of this exhibition, CODE presented an in situ graphic installation presenting the Factory which the team will have created by 2030. From 2005 until 2018, going beyond its magazine status, CODE developed activities ranging from design and curating to art consultancy and production. In 2019, the exhibition entitled "In CODE we trust" at PS3 in NYC dedicated the collective. Each team member, thrust into fame, received offers of the most prestigious positions. Yhe graphic design agency, Codefrisko (of the CODE magazine) became Codesaatchifrisko. In 2026, the team formed again and decided to create a Warholian independent platform which included, a supra-contemporary museum, an erotic library, residencies for android artists, a chocolate swimming pool and an air guitar club... A 1/1 map of this "factory" was shown at the Winkelhaar Design Museum.
The artists: A Ciel Ouvert, Lisa Allegretta, CODE Magazine, Ephameron, Import Export Architecten, Grin, Tom Klinkowstein, Monsieur Moiré, Pantopicon, Irene Perera, Unfold.

Recyclart
July 2006 — July 200
From July 2006 till January 2010, Code has moved its office in Recyclart, a cultural center in Brussels, and organized monthly exhibitions. Code thus took advantage of the dynamic of Vitrin&Out, a common opening with the other studios located in the site of Recyclart, every first Thursday of the month. This regular event strengthened audience loyalty and enriched considerably the content of the magazine since Recyclart is a usual crossing point for many young artists.
The artists: Frédéric Biesmans, Affreux, Antoine Detaille, Stefanie Scheurell, Adrien Vescovi, Justin Morin, David de Tscharner, Christiane Schmidt et Didier Guillain, Tache Production (Thomas De Decker), JMK, Eric Croes (invites: Saïd Abitar, Elodie Antoine, Stephan Balleux, Jean-Baptiste Bernadet, Sébastien Bonin, Pascal Bernier, Lucia Bru, Patrick Croes, Lionel Estève, Nicolas di Felice, Frédéric Fourdinier, Bernard Gigounon, Laurent Thiry, David de Tscharner, Jelle Vandemeulebroeke), Mathias Nouel & Tatiana Bohm, Sophia Boubolis, Kimberly Clark, Laurens G., François Martig, Vincent Mauger, Pierre Debusschere.

Festival Maïs
October 20th 2006 — November 20th 2006
The urban art festival Maïs gave the opportunity to Code to occupy a parking located downtown Brussels. Each artist exhibited in one of the 10 floors of the parking. The paintings, videos, sculptures and other installations remained visible 24h/24h for a month. First chosen as a simple formal observation that can gather a number of artists, the theme of “stratification” led the Code team to question the urban environment. The city is, indeed, permanently remodeled by layers, as much from the material standpoint (thrown chewing gums, superimposed advertising posters, ascending skyscrapers…) as from the social one (one fashion or culture taking over another one, success crushing mediocrity, crowds…). While wandering in the parking, the visitors thus discovered monumental works, which were playful and critical at the same time.
The artists: Atelier Blink (B), Jean-Baptiste Bernadet (F), Collectif_Fact (CH), Cyprien Chabert (F), Eric Croes (B), Les Haut-Parleurs (FR), Benoît Ménard (F), Samuel Rousseau (F), Léopoldine Roux (F), Daniel Ruggiero (CH), Helmut Smits (NL), Jelle Vandemeulebroeke (B).

Bains::Connective
October 8th - 9th 2005
The first exhibition curated by Code at the event of the launch of the first issue took place in Bains::connective, an Art Déco swimming pool which has been transformed into a cultural center. All the artists were invited to react to this atypical space, with installations that manifest a spare or even embryonic quality, akin to the first Code issue. A radio documentary by the Haut-Parleurs, an artist collective from Bordeaux, was recorded during the opening and broadcasted on Radio Campus in Brussels, Radio Sauvagine in Bordeaux and on www.radiofrac.com.
The artists: À ciel ouvert (F) / Élodie Antoine (B) / Peter Hansen (USA) / Sen Takayama (JP) / Jelle Vandemeulebroeke (B) / Liping Weng & Olivier Meys (B)
